Started at 0001 and at 1 billion pop
My longest was about 4 centuries of active history, starting from a post-catastrofic Earth with a bare-minimum TN techs and after 4 centuries it was a several handreds of stellar systems with about 45 billions of Empire population. Lagged severely at this stage. All the next campaigns I run without major fighter fleets and with limited light forces overall, to limit the lagging smoothly.

My longest was just shy of 180 years. My empire was surprisingly small colony wise because I played very conservatively that game. What usually happens to me is that I play a long game after each version release and end up abandoning it once the new version comes out - or when I get excited about an upcoming feature and decided I can’t continue the current game without it.

I like to play slowly and watch the Empire evolve over time. I keep research speed at just 25%, so I don’t have to refit my ships too often. That’s also why I don’t tend to have very long runs in terms of in-game time.
I think my longest-running campaign is actually the Axis Empire (there’s an AAR on the forum). I’m only about 36 years in. I usually use increments of no more than 8 hours and advance the game quite slowly. (I’m in 1969, started in 1933)
I like getting attached to my officers, watching them gain experience, build their careers and earn awards. I don’t turtle much either: after 40 years I have 64 known systems, 22 populations, a total population of 2.311 billion, and around 1 million tons of naval tonnage.
Longest in game time or in real time?
It’s the 236th year in my current game, but due to the 25% research speed and industrial start, almost nothing has happened in my empire so far (except for a couple of battles with Raiders and the destruction of one NPR scout), and most of the time I was running on autoturn with 30 Day button.
I’ve only been playing this for 4 months.
