United Terran Empire - Under the Rising Phoenix

Preamble

This is a campaign I started quite a bit ago, it has been going for almost 200 years with a conventional start at 10% research speed, 3 NPRs at the start and 200% difficulty. I’m also limiting myself to no shields, no direct fire weapons besides Lances, Railguns, and Gauss. I will be writing AARs about some of the interesting stuff that happens instead of doing long term campaign reports, and in general the idea is to write these campaign reports as if they were a summary of a historical report from the future instead of a novelization of events.

Bear with me as I won’t have many screenshots for this start, only for things to come.

I’ve been doing a lot of solo RP and would love to hear of ideas of how I can expand the RP to members of this board, if there is interest of course. I’m new to writing AAR so let met know if there are any topics I could improve on!

An Introduction to the post-post-collapse state of Humanity

The series of war fought in the 21st century made all other wars pale in comparison. What is now apocryphally known as World War II is sometimes considered to be the first nuclear war, though it could scarcely be compared to the Great Wars fought just a century afterwards. Few nation states remained after the Conflagration, and the few that did spent decades recovering. The struggle of the rebuilding left what remained of humanity in a new state, one that was anti-war, fervor grew amidst a religious revival, and a sense of shared brotherhood festered the lands of man. Most nations signed in the late 2060s the final declaration of confederation, uniting into the United Terran Confederation. The sign chosen to represent humanity was that of an ascendant phoenix, humanity had proven that it had the might to destroy itself, and that with this power it should now turn first inwards to reconstruct, then outwards to expand to inherit the stars.

This new government inherited a world in ruins, but also much of the technological expansion that came from the war. At the turn of the century a new promise was made alongside that of no more brother wars between humans - that of the exploration of the stars and the creation of new humans worlds. This had been considered possible due to the new set of technologies that had been developed. At this point all nations of the old earth governments had either joined or become too irrelevant to matter. At the year 2100 Man’s true exploration of space began, with the now United Terran Empire having 2 billion citizens. At first space exploration was slow and steady, but soon mankind had colonized most of the Solar system and dozens of other systems.

Under the Wing of the Rising Phoenix

“Humanitas manet et resurgit”

The flag and motto of the United Terran Empire. The Phoenix is the official Imperial symbol and symbolizes the rebirth of humanity’s spirit. In the flag the phoenix extends it’s wing to cover all of the visible universe to defend all men under it. To contrast the Phoenix the universe is represented as pure black, making it appear desolate. Only those under the Phoenix’s wing can know peace and prosperity.

Soon mankind had discovered alien life, and the ideals of peace it took to space no longer held precedent. Humans promised not to have brother wars anymore - not wars against external threats. If one were to compare humans from the 21st century to those of the 23rd one would find that religiosity is much higher, seeing humans as being made in the image of God and worthy of inheriting the stars after weathering the Great Wars. Another trend was the development of a martial pride, as humans were so warlike that they nearly wiped themselves out. This was something the Imperial War Directory fostered after the discovery of alien worlds. The average citizen enjoys a life of extreme richs incomparable to previous eras of humanity. Universal basic income is granted to all, and work is often considered optional. What is not considered optional is expansion. Culture made the humans of this age seek growth in population to man the frontiers, with medals for motherhood, and free waivers with subsidies and plenty of land to faraway colonies. Many marry just to receive these bonuses.

Excerpt of the United Human Empire’s Fatherland Anthem (Formerly known as Bethoven’s 9th Symphony):

Joy, thou beauteous godly lightning, Daughter of Elysium, Fire drunken we are ent’ring Heavenly, thy holy home! Thy enchantments bind together, What did custom stern divide, Every man becomes a brother, Where thy gentle wings abide.

Be embrac’d, ye millions yonder! Take this kiss throughout the world! Brothers—o’er the stars unfurl’d Must reside a loving Father.

Who the noble prize achieveth, Good friend of a friend to be; Who a lovely wife attaineth, Join us in his jubilee! Yes—he too who but one being On this earth can call his own! He who ne’er was able, weeping retreat from this league alone!

He who in the great ring dwelleth, Homage pays to sympathy! To the stars above leads she, Where on high the Unknown reigneth.

Joy is drunk by every being From kind nature’s flowing breasts, Every evil, every good thing For her rosy footprint quests. Gave she us both vines and kisses, In the face of death a friend, To the worm were given blisses And the Cherubs God attend.

Fall before him, all ye millions? Know’st thou the Creator, world? Seek above the stars unfurl’d, Yonder dwells He in the heavens.

The Sigma Tucanae Incident

In the 25th of February of 2292 the UTES Turin was attacked by an unknown assailant from the world dubbed Valkyrie at the Sigma Tucanae system five Standard Gravitational Jumps away from Sol towards the galactic West. The Turin Scarborough class Tug was carrying automated mining equipment as part of the Space Industrial Command campaign of exploration and colonization of the region dubbed as the Obscuris Expanse. Surface elements from a hitherto unknown alien race ambushed the Tug ship, releasing a mighty volley of what was later discovered to be advanced shortwave laser and plasma fire. Over 800 individual hits were registered. Mercifully, the entire volley was aimed at the module the Turin was tugging, the Buffalo class Logistics Module code 002. Plasma fire melted away the outer hull, while the stronger lasers bisected the ship from aft to forward within a minute of the start of the ambush. The Buffalo 002 had a crew of 175 coming from many different colonies of the Sol System, with 11 technicians from Mars onboard to ensure the correct setup of the automated mining equipment. Only 88 crew members and 7 technicians managed to make it to life pods before a catastrophic explosion destroyed the remains of the ship. This was considered an optimal result, as if the shot was directed at the smaller tug carrying the module it’s crew of 3820 would easily have been lost instead. Many lament the continued use of these old ships that are practically blind in the void, they had been designed and constructed in a time before mankind knew of the existence of alien races. Still, humanity needs it’s logistical arm.

Quick action by the crew of the Turin ensured that the tug decoupled from the module before what remained of it could enter a decaying orbit. UTEMM directive commands that any Merchant Marine ship found in a system with hostile elements should make an effort to return to any system with a known element of Space Military Command, but the commanding officer of the Turin, Lieutenant Commander Jake Talbot, ordered his ship to rescue the lifepods after detecting their distress signal before leaving orbit to return to Sol. Despite endangering his crew, the Turin managed to save the lifepods before retreating out of the system. For this Lieutenant Commander Jake Talbot was awarded the Merchant Marine Medal for Gallantry. After only five minutes the Turin had made off from Valkyrie’s orbit, and in the tense following moments no further weapon’s fire was detected. The Turin managed to make it back to Sol at the 11th of March 2292.

First Battle of Valkyrie

After analyzing the report, the admiralty decided to immediately dispatch a force to investigate Sigma Tucanae. Though the system did not fall within the three jump sovereignty exclusion zone, any xenos found to be attacking mankind’s ships and colonies was to be considered a combatant. The closest forward elements of Battlefleet Dunedain, comprising the five light cruisers of Cruiser Squadron Alpha were dispatched; the Prince of Provence, Arizona, Freistata, Murmansk, and Kagoshima. What followed was the first battle of Valkyrie. On the 4th of March Squadron Alpha arrived at Valkyrie, taking position within it’s L1 Lagrange Point. Radar aboard the Prince of Provence detected an estimated 15.000 metric tonnes of surface defensive facilities, including the ones that must have been used to attack the Turin. Squadron Alpha was ordered to approach until it’s Lance class particle beam weapons were in range. Before the light cruisers could fire, Surface-to-Orbit weapons from Valkyrie engaged the ships. It was as some analysts of the Space Force expected, the alien weapons at Valkyrie have more advanced specifications than their human counterparts.

Cruiser Squadron Alpha withstood the first salvo of powerful long range lasers while remaining off the range of the plasma bombards. At a distance of 500.000 KMs the cruisers exchanged long range fire. The outdated lances had difficulty hitting the fortified STO positions, and after two minutes of fire the outer layers of the Kagoshima’s armor had been melted off, until the forward keel compartments began to leak into the void. Captain Jimmy Lockmiller ordered the ship to withdraw from the conflict, acting now as reserve at the jump point away from Sigma Tucanae while the crew repaired the damage it sustained. Fire from the Valkyrie turned to the Prince of Provence, but at this point the thirteen installations returning fire had been reduced to nine, and soon all planetside guns had been silenced. Humanity had won the First Battle of Valkyrie. At least thirteen orbital weapon installations from the unknown race had been destroyed, at the human side the Prince of Provence had suffered light damage and the Kagoshima had to undergo extensive repairs with zero casualties. Enemy forces at Valkyrie were determined to have been outnumbered 20 to 1 in the gunnery engagement. No further survivors were found in the wreck of Buffalo 002, so the Cruiser Squadron was ordered to return.

Operation Brynhildr

Military Ship classes levied for Operation Brynhildr

Commercial ship classes levied for Operation Brynhildr

What came next was planning for Operation Brynhildr. Battlefleet Nidhogg commanded by Rear Admiral Timo Glücklich was chosen to complete the operation, then mobilized after receiving reinforcements from the Solar Naval Reserve. The force was separated into a vanguard force denominated Taskforce Phoenix commanded by Commodore Carolina Gallegos, a main force called Taskforce Tyr commanded by Commodore Regina Ragazzo, and a third auxiliary taskforce commanded by Captain Floor Simon. Taskforce Phoenix carried three modern light cruisers, including the Phoenix Command Light Cruiser and the Danzig and Valles Marineris Light cruisers. To bolster the vanguard’s punch, the Hellas Heavy Cruiser was ordered to follow it in it’s first combat operation. The goal of the vanguard was to perform a patrol around Sigma Tucanae’s perimeter, then investigate Valkyrie with it’s more powerful onboard radars. Taskforce Tyr meanwhile was the heavy punch, it had the Britannia Assault Carrier equipped with six atmospheric assault squadrons and a special operations marine fast boarding craft. It was being escorted by four modern Cologne class Frigates, the Cologne, Plovdiv, Copernicus, and Neo Naples, while three more ships of the same class formed Frigate Wolfpack Wotan; the Tochter aus Elysium, Tycho, and Mankind Remains. The auxiliary force carried a the Sydney class Tug, who in turn tractored the Wagon Class Military Logistical Station to be positioned in orbit around Beachhead. This was also the force that coordinated the two Orbital Dropships that carried the main human surface element: The Scipio and the Valhalla. Each carried an entire Mobile Infantry Regiment for a total force 6200 men strong. Their tonnage together was 50000, while they expected to fight an enemy force weighing an estimated 8900 tons. Surely it would be an easy victory, especially given the successes in orbit.

Each Mobile Infantry regiment was organized by two mechanized infantry battalions and an infantry battalion, Mechanized Infantry doctrine relied on the shock-and-awe of atmospheric fighters, orbital bombardment, and aggressive IFV assaults coordinated with APCs, though even after the infantrymen were dropped from their vehicles their large powered suits guaranteed extensive survivability, mobility, and firepower. Heavy Infantry was embedded into each squad, and included tank-hunter suits and assault suits. Each Battalion had a specialist Ranger forward fire direction and scouting squad, these could direct fire from the atmospheric assault fighters and ships providing orbital bombardment. The Hellas heavy cruiser was chosen to be the main orbital bombardment ship, bringing it’s 10 fast firing 400mm Railguns and Joyeuse class Lance down upon the world of Valkyrie. Each Regiment also had a mechanized artillery battalion to support it’s forward elements, an anti-air company, and four companies of logistics.

The Admiralty decided to create a forward logistical base at the world Sigma Tucanae I, now called Beachhead. At the 27th of May Taskforce Phoenix arrived at Sigma Tucanae and completed it’s mission, though it detected a much higher volume of enemy forces than before. It was unclear if the garrison was bolstered in the 23 days since the First Battle of Valkyrie. Only now with the deployment of a logistical hub the Space Force could deny resupply to the world with it’s Frigate Wolfpacks. Before this the closest logistic hub was 19 billion KMs and four Gravitational Jumps away. At the detection of new surface forces Taskforce Phoenix was ordered to approach and engage, something that it excelled in as the heavy Hellas Cruiser approached within 500.000 KMs. New STOs began to exchange fire with Taskforce Phoenix, but the Hellas Heavy Cruiser excelled at such combat, it’s extensive heavy railguns peppered Valkyrie and silenced it’s STO weapons, while ground forces retreated into bunkers. The Mobile Infantry would need to move in to clear them out. The Valles Marineris suffered minor armor damage in the exchange, but remained combat-effective and in orbit around the world.

The next step of the operation was the hell-drop. Valkyrie had a much higher gravity than human forces were used to fighting in, 1.46 that of Terra, and it had a dangerous atmosphere with double the density of Terra’s. The Falcon class Atmospheric Gunships of CVS Britannia had to be modified to fight in this world. The surface was a layer of frozen water with black mountains jutting out like bones. Ammonia fell in hails, before the day made it rise back to the atmosphere to rain in the next night. Those were the conditions for the Orbital Assault of Valkyrie.

The ground was set for the Struggle for Valkyrie…

Disposition of Terran Empire Ground Forces at the Storming of Valkyrie

The forces dispatched to perform an orbital drop strike are comprised of two standard Terran Empire regiments, each standardized to 25kt of transport weight. These forces are organized into the sixth and seventh Mobile Infantry Regiments.

The Mobile Infantry was designed to follow the Terran Empire’s doctrine of Combined Arms and Shock & Awe, including a Forward Fire Direction element in each of it’s front line battalions to integrate support from warship orbital bombardment and/or ground support from specialized atmospheric gunships. Alongside that, it has Regiment-level artillery integration in the form of a Mechanized Artillery Battalion. Alongside these elements, the main fighting forces are separated into three battalions, one infantry and two mechanized.

All infantry in the Mobile Infantry is heavy infantry, designed to be able to withstand the rigors of ground combat in the 23rd century. The simplest unit wears the heaviest most defensible power armor technology allows, while the role of anti-tank or support guns are performed by soldiers equipped with combat suits, such as the assault suits that perform the role of crew-served anti-personnel. The role of the infantry is to hold ground taken by the mechanized battalions. These Mech battalions are in turn comprised of APCs and IFVs, with minor support from heavier tank killer elements. This model has been proven before in the orbital drop at Niven decades ago, and with the 6 to 1 tonnage advantage the MI will enjoy it is expected that the assault on Valkyrie will be a quick victory, especially with the newer more powerful ships offering orbital support. The Empire has thus far achieved easy victories in it’s bombardment campaign against STOs in the First Battle for Valkyrie.

Lastly a company sized self-propelled anti-air element provides AA, and four separate logistical companies resupply each regiment at the front lines.

Above the ground units, the Cruiser Hellas and two Danzig class Light Cruisers provide bombardment against heavier targets that the six squadrons of Falcon gunships from Britannia can’t destroy, and in turn the Britannia offers support and acts as a mobile geosync orbit logistical base to her six squadrons, utilizing a skyhook for retrieval, ressuply, and repair of atmospheric gunships and smaller shuttles.

Each Squadron is formed by six Falcon class Gunships. Squadrons Alpha, Beta, and Charlie were directed to support the Mech brigades spearheading the assault, while the remaining Delta, Epsilon, and Fenris squadrons perform Flak Suppression missions searching for possible enemy Anti-air elements in the first hours of the invasion.

With all of these elements set up for the invasion, the order was given ahead at 1108 on the eighth of April 2292. The Orbital Drop was unopposed and now the Mobile Infantry would have to fight their way against entrenched enemy positions to take over the world. Brigadier Hákon Liðrson and Brigadier Abe Hyatt both decided to take an offensive approach, committing most of their forces to a direct assault. It was time for the first face-to-face contact.

The First Advance - D + 8 hours

The assault starts and elements of the 13th Mobile Infatry Mech Battalion are the first to make contact with the enemy, though the first casualty of the war is awarded to Atmospheric Squadron Beta when Falcon 010 is destroyed by enemy AA fire. The 13th achieves a breakthrough, though a worrying pattern emerges as they shoot at fleeing enemy elements - shots are extremely difficult to hit in the heavy gravity of the world, and those that do hit have a low chance to penetrate, and even lower to guarantee a combat kill.

After the downing of Lieutenant Commander Sandi Mackler’s Falcon the admiralty decides to name one of the comets after her, though later it is discovered that she has managed to exfil and avoid the enemy for long enough to be rescued back into the Britannia.

Falcon 022 meanwhile suffered a close call after being hit by AA, though it managed to survive this attack due to it’s advanced armor. A call is made for Falcon 022 to retire to Britannia for repair, while the other gunships remain flying.

image

As the confusing transmissions of battle arrive at the bridge of the Phoenix Command Cruiser, the statistics start to show a worrying pattern.

An entire mech battalion was incapable of destroying a single enemy unit, while the rest, even those that achieved breakthroughs, were only able to kill small amounts of enemy infantry, and not a single heavier enemy unit. The heavy bombardment provided by the Hellas barely achieved any hits, and even after achieving a hit with it’s 400mm Railgun the target survived. The alien forces appear to have personal armor far exceeding the capabilities of the Mobile Infantry.

While casualties were not heavy, they can be considered unsustainable for the current rate of the campaign. The outnumbered enemy is able to put up enough firepower to trade favorably in most engagements. If the forces were matched, the Mobile Infantry would have been slaughtered. High command decides to give the Mobile Infantry another 16 hours to achieve considerable success.

Preparing for the worst, the admiralty prepares to reinforce the two regiments with the first Mobile Infantry Division coming from Luna, a voyage that will take 15 days.

The Struggle for Valkyrie - D + 24 hours

In the following day another three Falcons were hit, with two being instantly destroyed and one being crippled with internal damage, but somehow still flying. Lieutenant Commander Stígandison had to seal several compartments in the gunhip with tape and sealing foam for it to survive reorbiting via skyhook. Meanwhile LTC Mitchel Macintosh was killed in the destruction of his own Falcon, a large moon of the newly renamed Remembrance gas giant was named after him.

Things did not fare any better down planetside, where the MI suffered hundreds of casualties.

image

Enemy units meanwhile were being destroyed at the same rate, no more breakthroughs were achieved and it became clear that the Mobile Infantry was ill-equipped to deal with the aliens on the surface of Valkyrie. It was doubtful if the two regiments could survive for half a month to wait for further reinforcements, and even if they did, dropping more MI into the world would only offer the enemy more targets.

The heavy decision was made to call back the ground units and to retreat from Valkyrie. To cover this retreat the warships on orbit were given the go ahead to bombard the surface indiscriminately. If humanity was to not hold Valkyrie, then neither would the race codenamed SIG. This bombardment would most likely kick up enough dust to the atmosphere to make the world enter a years-long winter.

An early retreat was called as humanity was not fighting for it’s survival, merely to deny the enemy the system of Sigma Tucanae, and to prevent any future incidents. It was deemed that the sacrifice of the Mobile Infantry was not worth it for the current strategic goals.

A successful fighting retreat was conducted at D +30 hours, and the Mobile Infantry retreated with minimal casualties.

Analysis of the Storming of Valkyrie

It was incredibly easy for mankind to retain it’s mastery over the void, but it did not translate to a decisive victory in operation Brynhildr. The Mobile Infantry was unable to transform a decisive void and orbital victory into an overall decisive victory. Later analysis shows that this was mostly due to the technological edge the SIG hold over mankind.

image

A basic enemy “warrior” possesses both stronger armor and weapons, as well as having the considerable advantage of being effective at the given terrain, while the Mobile Infantry suffered greatly with the heightened gravity and freezing temperatures of Valkyrie. The United Terran Empire Space Command decided that if it were to attempt to take over Valkyrie it would need units specialized to fight in high gravity worlds, and for that a Haven class hab station was comissioned to serve as the orbital portion of a future high gravity training station in one of the many super earths in human controlled space.

Even the subsequent bombardment of Valkyrie proved innefective in uprooting enemy ground elements.

This defeat worried high command, especially given the planned storming of several alien worlds in the proposed operation Titanomachy. More hawkish elements of the Mobile Infantry also resented the defeat, opening a wider chasm between it’s relations with the naval branch of Space Command.

Knowing what you know now, what would you have done differently and/or what’s gonna change next time?

Well, this campaign is more of RP game, not really me trying to win. I was trying to pull off my interpretation of combined arms + shock & awe in Aurora and I think I managed to pull it off to a certain extent. Now, for results, I think compositions heavier on infantry are in general better than not, even the breakthroughs I got did very little once you consider the fact that infantry packs more shots per ton than any other type of formation.

One thing I will say is that the ground combat is brutal with a peer or more advanced power. My previous ground campaigns as I aluded to in Niven were way simpler as the enemy was less advanced technologically. A force simpler than the Mobile Infantry you see here comprised of just mostly infantry fared way better. My force outnumbered the enemy’s ~6 to 1, it was more than the advisable 3 to 1 you see in most offensive campaigns, though that can and should balloon higher when it comes to naval invasions, especially considering a tech disparity.

I’m not sure if there is an easy way for me to take over this world. Even a Super Heavy vehicle with heavy anti-tank would simply not have enough shots to pierce an entrenched enemy battlewagon. The only thing that was killing enemy wagons was the Hellas’s heavy particle lance and some lucky tank destroyer shots.

I think that if I really wanted to win this I could just let the numbers win for me, bring another 100kt worth of mobile infantry in the division I had prepared and win through attrition - but once again roleplay prevented me from doing that. There is no way my empire would undergo those casualty rates.

I’m lucky these high tech enemies are Rakhas, otherwise I could be getting issues to maintain mastery over space.

So in short - more orbital bombardment with supply ships and maintenance modules to fix my ships during prolonged bombardment and just winning through attrition by dropping more warm bodies. I don’t do that because My Mobile Infantry is more like the book than the movie lol. But the RP will make me opt for more research instead. I hope that by making gravity specialists the hit rates will improve, and I need a new model of Mobile Infantry anyway, I think I’m 1 defense and 2 weapons techs behind my current tech level.

Also, the artillery fared much better than I expected it would, it got a lot of kills, and I believe I will include more artillery in my divisions, maybe even have a 1 to 1 artillery battalion to frontline battalion rate, instead of the current 1 to 3. I guess that is even more shock & awe. Spend ammunition, not soldiers.

Another good thing to keep in mind is that hit rates, penetration rates, and kill rates compound one another. You can’t just look at each in a vaccuum. If you have 1000 shots and a 10% penetration rate with the others at 100% it’s very different than if you have a 30% hit rate,30% penetration and 30% kill rates. What high tech or peer tech enemies do is highlight just how important the rest of the math is, while if you have 100% pen & kill then you can mostly ignore the hit rates.

Keep in kind that the ground forces signature you detect from orbit is usually going to be smaller than the true ground forces size, since that signature is reduced by the fortification level of the ground units.

I usually consider 3x the detected signature to be a reasonable, if slightly conservative, estimate, which would have your 50.000-ton force at slightly worse than a 2:1 numerical ratio. Given the enemy tech advantage and fortification level, that’s not nearly enough as you discovered.

While it is true that Beethoven authored the most famous music for it, The Ode to Joy itself was written by Friedrich Schiller.

Friedrich Schiller also gave us “Wilhelm Tell”, the founding myth of Switzerland (though he was a German), which is a hymn to rugged, defiant self-sufficiency.
Given the tone of your campaign I thought I’d mention that.
Worth a read too.

Aftermath of Operation Brynhildr

After both regiments were successfully exfiltrated from the planet’s surface a general withdrawal was called for Battlefleet Nidhogg. Humanity’s logistics were already spread thin and each moment those ships remained in the system increased the risk of unfavorable void action.

It was at that moment, however, that SPACOM decided to create a new Patrol Battlefleet, naming it after the operation. Thus Patrol Battlefleet Brynhildr would become the fleet tasked with protecting the Solar Core from the galactic westward past 3W Zeta Tucanae, with it’s headquarters at that same system. The Wagon class Military Logistical Station commited to the operation was left at Beachhead’s orbit as the first Maintenance base for this nascent patrol fleet, and the Dresden and Neo-Naples frigates were detached from the force to form the first wolfpack. New facilities were ordered to be constructed on Terra to extend the new fleet’s operational capability, another Wagon.

Later on the 6th of June 2292 The Brazzaville Tug brought the Clausewitz Fuel Transport Module to ressuply Battlefleet Brynhildr. At all times the powerful sensors of the frigates could pick up the enemy forces they bombardend not long ago. It was a physical manifestation of their failure of securing the world for humanity after so many lives were lost.

The rest of 2292 was spent in hard toil to continue the unprecedented expansion of the United Terran Empire Space Command. In the new year the world of Mars performed a grand ceremony launching 12 Ascraeus class Corvettes. The people of Mars watched as twelve new stars were added to their night sky in a chevron formation, glowing brighter as their powerful lance weapons were tested. These were the first warships produced in Mars, and it’s 1.4 billion souls could now proudly exclaim that their sons protected the Empire.

A total of 120.000 tons of military ships were launched that day. These corvettes were quickly put to their function of safeguarding and patrolling human systems, in most cases relieving frigates twice their size and allowing said warships to be put in reserve forces for the upcoming campaigns. In a way the tonnage freed up to take part in offensive actions was nearly double that of the finished corvettes.

An exception was made for the aging Falkirk class frigates, with most ships of the 10 ships in the class approaching 40 years of proud service. SPACOM ordered the scrapping of all but two of these ships, who now were to serve as museum ships. The two decades newer Neo-Zürich class was determined to be worthy of combat, and as such eight of these ships were assembled once more into wolfpacks. Soon a grand fleet would be assembled.

Back at Terra the largest Science Ship in history was launched, the von Braun class displaced 100kt and was in practice a moving scientific base, carrying dozens of smaller craft, probes, sensor buoys, and even it’s own detachments of scout ships. It was designed for years-long exploratory and scientific missions.

Industrial and Colonial aims for the Terran Empire

After nearly a century and a half of galactic colonization the Empire has greatly expanded, creating an industrial war machine that relies on the automatic strip mining of dozens of worlds and ferrying such supplies back to the industrial worlds of the Solar Core, chief among them the worlds of Sol. Shipyards in Luna build several types of frigates, Mars constructs corvettes and tugs, while the United Jovian moons are adept at creating cruisers. Terra builds the larger ships such as the von Braun, despite the fact that the majority of terran industrial production is actually research and development.

There are two separate designations for groups of jump-connected systems. They are the Expanse and the Sector. Sectors are made up of settled worlds, while Expanses are merely explored for the prospects of future expansion, as well as patrolled for strategic depth. Terra still lays claim to any system it discovers in Expanses, and many are exploited with automated miners.

Even the most settled of the sectors, the Solar Core, is still mostly made up of empty worlds ready to be exploited, while other sectors have less than a hundred million citizens and are mostly an even more empty frontier. Many geographers prefer to call these “frontier sectors” until they are settled and industrialized.

Technically there is a third type of space though, as mankind has entered diplomacy and even accepted the Virar’s Coalition sovereignty over several systems, though many warhawks within SPACOM dread such classificatio, and have blocked it becoming official. Many call it the Virar Expanse, signifying that in the future it will belong to humanity.

The main problem is the lack of a comfortable border for humanity, with what is believed to be the Virar Homeworld being two jumps away from settled human space. This fact, combined with the recent colonial struggles, have lead to a breakdown of diplomatic relations, making the Virar revoke trade access. In practice this also cut the Virar into islands, as they needed to traverse through terran space to reach some of their colonies. Many lament the fact that humanity could have already explored it’s galactic west were it not for the Virar.

Operation Brynhildr was rushed to prevent the existance of an alien race from walling off human expansion, though it’s momentum was stunted.

Currently humanity holds a dominant position over it’s holdings in the Yggdrasil and Echoes Sectors. Yggdrasil is a vast expanse mostly dominated by automines and extensive terraforming stations protected by corvettes, while Echoes is dominated by the several worlds that had been encountered to have alien ruins with advanced technology, including two constructs that humanity believes can be studied for more effective research. As such it’s primary objective is the colonization of the Echoes sector.

While settling the systems of Echoes is mostly an industrial matter, the next goal for humanity is a military goal. In the past it was believed that Gaia would be the next sector to be established due to just how many worlds are easy to terraform within it, a few even require no modification for human habitation… Though that meant that many of these worlds were inhabited by other alien races. Gaia has been in a military quarantine for two decades now, though the planned Operation Titanomachy could mean the entry of humanity into the Gaia Expanse for good, taking it with conquest.

And the last strategic goal mankind is currently pursuing is the colonization of the Hercules Expanse.

Named after the Mu Herculis system, and created after it’s discovery, the Hercules system is often sold in Terra as a “Sector within a System” due to just how viable it is to engineer Mu Herculis to human life and industrial production. The large triple star system has an incredible wealth of terraformable worlds and minerals, as well as many connections to other system that in the future could add to this planned growing Hercules Sector.
