Which is the smallest effective defense station that I could build?

I’m trying to increase the local defence of my colonies, without building to many ships.
Apart distributing more STOs, I would like to have some orbital defence base.
Can anyone share the design of small defence satellites or bases that worked for him/her?
Thank you of the kind help!

Thank you, skoormit!
Nice design. :slightly_smiling_face:
Can I call it “a bit extreme”, for the 60 shots against one target? But surely effective, I can imagine.

I am currently deploying these in groups as long-term jump point defences.

Thanks, Steve.
No PDs at all, for a bit of self defence?
And I can imagine no shield and low armour to keep them cheap, right?

It is an ambush weapon with 60 second reload time, so it either wins on the first salvo or dies

It is also something of an experiment too and will probably need ships to back it up. I considered having a cheaper reactor and slower reload but it didn’t make too much difference in terms of cost and it might get a second shot vs a standard transit. I’ll see how it performs in action.

Ok guys, don’t miss, you only get once chance. It’s basically a stationary fighter with a big gun!

Mmmm that yummy 0.1% IFR, how much engineering stuff do they have?

It’s actually the crew quarters that are more expensive, due to the 15 year deployment time. Saves all the micromanagement of rotating defence forces.

You don’t have to fire all of them at once.

You can change targets every increment, and only assign the launchers you want to fire at that target.
Fire some at the first target, then five seconds later fire some others at another target, etc.

But it’s a fine design tweak to add some more MFCs if you want to have the flexibility of firing at multiple targets at once.
The MFC is only 5t and 1.2BP, so it’s easy enough to find something to trade off for it. I would probably reduce the engineering tonnage first; Blobs are meant to be parked at a colony that provides maintenance, which means any engineering tonnage is only useful when a Blob is being transported (unless in a military hangar) or if it arrives at a colony before sufficient maintenance capacity is in place. A temporary situation, in other words. Having 50t of engineering provides a bit of deployment flexibility. So I’d trade some of that flexibility if I wanted to gain some targeting flexibility.

This would be a cool use case for automated crew one day. You have to pay the penalty in HS for a computer bank + reactors to run it all and your crew training never increases but in return you don’t have to worry about deployment times anymore :slightly_smiling_face: But that’s probably beyond the scope of this thread.
