Good Written Tutorials for beginners

Good afternoon everyone.

I am looking for a good written Tutorial for this game.

I enjoy it, but the video Tutorials are kinda hard for me to follow just because some YouTubers can’t always get straight to the point, and I’d prefer to read a guide.

if someone could point me in the right direction id be very happy

Best bet is to simply use the Transcript function of YouTube and then print it out. Else there is Aurora 4x | 7w1 which is a lil dated or Naval Gazing Tags/Aurora which is also dated, two different styles. The foundational stuff is all there, the specifics may have been tweaked/changed though.

I have read the first tutorial you mentioned it just cut off right before explaining colonization :sob:

I’ll check out the second option you’ve mentioned when I get back home!

Thank you!

If your looking for early AURORA I think its VB6 not sure …look here gud picture tutorial

Given how different the game is nowadays in the brave new world of C#, I suspect that a VB6-era tutorial is likely to do more harm than good …

The video tutorials are great, and all of us owe a big “thank you” to the folks who create them, but it would be nice to have written tutorials that break the game down into very small pieces.

The video tutorials often assume those of us who watch them have a certain level of existing knowledge, which is not always the case. Or, the information they provide goes far beyond the problem the player wants to solve right now.

When I wanted to know how to send my new beam weapon fleet to point A, aim them at the alien ships, and open fire, well, I just needed to know that and only that process. I looked in vain for a 3 minute video on “How to attack that alien ship orbiting Mars.”

I should add that some of us learn better by reading. These days so many people want to watch videos. That’s ok. I know I’m old and obsolete. Back when I started playing computer games they came with a nice, thick rule book. Those days are long gone, but I still understand better by reading a couple of sentences than by watching a video. With the video it’s usually “clickclickclickclick,” with the cursor jerking this way and that…

This is on 2.7.1, it’s probably the most recent you can find.

I love his phrase “those few decisions lead to cascading design choices.” Made me laugh out loud.

The old design forum had a wealth of design philosophies and conflicting opinions about what “optimum” means. So many design ideologies based on RP requirements rather than maxing out a particular ship design. I love this game!

Some game mechanics are in the new Wiki. Others can be in Discord or Reddit (but I don’t this second platform). Even others could be deduced from the AARs (still few ones here until now… I think many players are waiting for v3.0.0 to start new games :slightly_smiling_face:).
And in the end, you can try to ask here about your doubts. Many of the members here are the same of the old forum, and veterans always had a good story to tell.

The wiki seems to have the greatest potential for being a written guide about how to play.

I made a guide years ago for a simple (to me) computer task to serve as an easy reference for other employees. There were so many things that I felt needed marked up images to convey accurately, that it ended up being 20 pages long and taking nearly a day to create.

I prefer written tutorials personally, but I suspect the video ones are easier to make.
