I know like at the beginning of the game w9 ASMs are a lot but like how do you tell when you have to much damage
Like I mean someone recently build a JP defense station with 200 box launchers and and 81 warheads each and in a triangle around a JP with 4 stations on each area of the triangle that’s 12 station that do 16200 alpha strike damage
Can something even break through that or is that overkill
Depends on the game settings, but yes theoretically there are invasion forces that could survive that. For example, if the missiles don’t have ECCM and the invader is high tech, they might just all miss. Same with low speed missiles vs high speed attacker, or not enough fire controls vs number of attackers, or attackers that take a LOT of damage per ship to kill, etc.
To add to Steve’s comment, it’s also important to remember that missiles penetrate at n^2, where n is how many layers of armor you’ve breached. If each of your missiles does just 4 damage, you will only breach 2 layers of armor per missile. Heavy ships may have 12 or even more layers, and enough components that it might take 100s of missile strikes to even begin to damage components.
To make matters worse, your targets might have missiles capable of destroying your stations before they’ve fired off all their missiles. While the first wave could be destroyed, the next wave of ships would be unimpeded.
So, as Steve said, it really depends on relative tech levels, missile design, and target ship capabilities.
