I’ve been listening to generic “Ambient Space Music” I find on youtube, but none of it has been good enough to become the soundtrack to Aurora in my head; it’s all pretty mediocre.
What do you listen to while you play?

Recently, I watched The Expanse. And it made me wanna play Aurora.
I listen to Patternshift, Especially the “Mistakes of the Makers” albums.
.
…I keep making mistakes in space…
Everything from Motorhead to Beethoven, Sepultura to Bill Evans, Tears fo Fears to Gentle Giant, Duran Duran to Bach, Miles Davis to Opeth, Rush to Tangerine Dream, John Coltrane to Cynic, etc., etc., etc.
I generally like to listen to the OST for Civilization: Beyond Earth
Gustav Holst The Planets, specifically Mars. Ever since I played Outpost as a kid that has been the definitive soundtrack that plays in my head whenever I think of space.
Normally some rock tracks, but as an Elite player since the 80s the Blue Danube slips in the as well. As you can guess from my avatar the Theme to Blakes 7 also makes an appearance, particularly when I’m playing as an Evil Empire ™
Good recommendation, never heard of them before, but my Aurora4X playlist is now a good deal longer.
God Is An Astronaut, of course
… And all post-rock with space ambient (Mogwai, Russian Circle, Kauan, We Lost The Sea…)
Great recommendation, I’ve never heard of them before. I just listened to a few hours of them though, and haven’t heard a song I disliked yet.
They kind of have a similar sound to Explosions in the Sky
I occasionally listen to music while playing Aurora, though I am good with silence. Most recently I tried the soundtracks from Pax Imperia Eminent Domain and Dune 2000.
These were the first games I played on my new P233 PC back in 1999. Not the first games ever, as I used to play Elite wireframe for the BBC Acorn B in about 1986+ and the first Dune game which was the narrative RP one rather than the later RTS Mk1.
But I played these two games a lot so it is quite evocative to hear that music while playing Aurora.
Oh yeah both Dune and Dune 2 had excellent soundtracks.
I’ve been enjoying The Crust soundtrack lately.
For me it’s Carbon Based Lifeforms. They have accompanied me through so many sci-fi games in the past 20 years. I love their work. Interloper is a fantastic album. For no beats and just ambience I recommend their album Twentythree.
I realize that you’ve been trying ambient space music, but there is a big difference between random songs on YouTube with that search parameter and the good stuff.
Steve Roach - The Magnificent Void, Structures from Silence, and Western Spaces
Many albums from Brian Eno
I know I know many more, but I can’t think of them off the top of my head.
There are two programs on the radio as well:
