The ability to scroll up and down , left and right for old small resolution screens
It’s not scrolling windows (which are unlikely to be implemented since Steve doesn’t need them), but this is what I used back when I was playing on a craptop with a pretty small monitor: http://www.digitallis.co.uk/pc/ResizeEnable/
I haven’t needed it for the modern version of the game because I’ve got better hardware now, but I don’t think anything has changed from VB6 that would make it work differently. Do be warned that not every window will rearrange neatly to every size, sometimes you might have to monkey around with it.
The program is 2001 vintage if you couldn’t tell from the site lol, but if you’re on an older computer it should still work.
Aurora will already work on 1400x900 screens, which is small by modern standards. Here is the June 2026 steam survey on resolutions. Only 1 in 25 respondents has a screen smaller than 1400x900. Given the amount of effort involved for something that very few people would use, it is very unlikely to happen.
But would it be difficult to add the ability to resize the window and add scrollbars? This would be quite convenient when you need to work with only one part of the window - for example, to compare the list of components on several ships for refit.
There are a lot of windows. I would need to add the scroll bars, add UI to enable and disable them, add DB access to store that status, maintain them in the future, work around them when they obscured controls in the dev environment, etc., all for a feature that the vast majority of players, including myself, would never use.
I’m not trying to be difficult here, but there is minimal chance I will ever have the enthusiasm to take that extra workload on in preference to using my limited free time to add other features instead.
Can you please comment how to use it? Need to try it.
I’m sure there’s quite a lot of people out there who’d find it useful. Also, I remember on the old forums there was some sort of a mod for Aurora that did a similar thing? Is it still around? Can someone clarify please?
I do have a 1080p monitor, but due to ongoing war in my country, electricity is not something you have every day, so my old laptop is the only alternative.
Would love to hear about the screen resize options.
Also, I think it should be possible to have custom resolution in a Virtual Machine (vmware?) environment. Anyone tried that?
The problem with that mod is that it will only work on 2.7.1 and won’t work on 3.0.0+.
Can your laptop accept an extra monitor? I don’t know how old “old” is but it is possible to attach extra monitors to laptops even if I haven’t done it myself.
Of course idk if that would make battery life a concern but might be worth a try if all else fails.
It’s not only a battery life problem usually, there are also nearly everyday air (missile) raids, and it’s not an option to urgently haul additional monitors to a bombshelter.
Had this problem myself before enlisting. ![]()
Unless I’m misremembering something, literally just download the program and run it when you start up Aurora. As long as it’s active windows that are not natively resizable will behave as if they are.
It’s been probably 15 years since I needed it, but IIRC the main issues are that if you frequently open and close game windows that need to be resized you’ll have to resize them each time, and it can be a little fiddly to find a resolution that displays everything without visually breaking any elements.
It’s a hacky little workaround made by a couple CS students a quarter-century ago and never updated since, so definitely not perfect and refined.
There also used to be a game parameters setting in VB6 for reduced height windows, but I dunno if it still exists or where it’s at if it does. One other minor trick if you’re mostly having issues with vertical cutoff rather than horizontal is to bind your taskbar to the left or right of the desktop instead of the bottom. That only gets you 1-2cm more vertical space but it’s something.
Just tried the ResizeEnable. It works, technically, but it does not give a workable result for me (on 1366x768). Windows change size but don’t show stuff that’s usually cut off. Another solution needed.
My current campaign is 2.7.1, so I’d be fine for a said mod. Can someone pm me a link?
Are you on the discord? If you search the linux channel for resize you can probably find the resize dll there.
Note that you still need AuroraPatch for that but similarly you should be able to find that there as well
