Conventional Empires

It is 1876. The world is divided between empires - the foremost is of course the British Empire, where the sun never sets. But there are also the French Empire, the Russian Empire, the newly arrived German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Spanish Empire, the fledgling Japanese Empire and, just to be different, the American Republic!

In December 1875, the telegraph was a common method of information transfer between countries and continents. The system, gradually developed over the previous decades, had become commonplace, reliable and essential by this time. A gentleman could send a short message from London to Tokyo in less than a hour. Well, as long as he could pay the fees! But that month, an extraordinary event was to disrupt the network and shock the people of Earth.

For a message arrived that shocked and disturbed everyone. It spoke of crazy things, of minerals with unbelievable properties, of frontiers to be explored, and of awful enemies to encounter. The message ended with the promise that by finding the transmitter of the message, the civilization that managed this feat would conquer the stars. An incredible prize for sure!

It did not take long for the greedy empires of Earth to accept this repeating message as true and take heed. Even if one empire did not believe the message, they could not ignore other empires going for it. An extremely low-tech race to space was about to begin!

This will be an Aurora C# version 2.8 campaign with 8 countries (and maybe more later), that is stuck at conventional tech level at first. They are going for Planet X - Minerva - where additional secrets will be revealed! Who can reach this juicy prize first? And obviously, it will not start until that version of the game is available.

Right, I was able to edit the column titles now. Since 2.8 has turned into 3.0 and will not come out anytime soon, I’ve decided to start this campaign in 2.7.1 version.

The house rules are:

  1. Empires will stay at conventional level until they reach Minerva

  2. Ground war on Earth is not allowed as there is no way to avoid collateral damage affecting other factions’ possessions plus it would require me to create the sort of massive ground armies these empires wielded during wartime.

Game settings are:

  1. Known Systems
  2. Research / terraform / survey speeds at 50%
  3. All types of NPRs are possible including multi-system ones (but not human ones)
  4. Basic Precursors, Raiders and Swarm, Rakhasa are allowed, no Invaders
  5. Civilians are on, should cause some extra chaos

Word of advice - do not try to setup a complex campaign when late at night and tired. I’ve messed it up five times now. Oh boy.

While The Message had electrified the nations of Earth, only the eight major powers were in a position to pursue it and attempt to reach Minerva. The first task was to find it as currently the farthest known planet was Uranus. Each nation began the construction of what would eventually be called a ‘deep space tracking station’ at the same time as their militaries began the arduous task of reorganizing for Aether operations and the mining magnates led the efforts to bring up the awesome Trans-Newtonian minerals.

Britain was the first to complete a DSTS on 28th February. The Royal Astronomical Society soon confirmed that Minerva did indeed exist and it was a gas giant like its four precovered siblings. It was larger than the ice giants but only half the size of Saturn. Unfortunately, it was not even close to Neptune. Alas, there were several planetoids between Neptune and Minerva as the latter was situated an incredible 12.7 billion kilometers from the Sun at its perihelion and 13.3 billion at its aphelion. It did have 26 moons of various sizes, one being as large as Venus and Earth. All Fellows agreed that was most certainly the location of the prize and the goal of the race. It became known as Odin and the other moons all received names from the Norse pantheon.

The German DSTS was opened on 4th March, the Russian on 6h April, the American on 11th April, the Austrian on 20th April, the French on 5th May, the Japanese on 17th September and the Italian on 1st October.

German scientists figured out a way to use TN-era tools to create conventional composite armour, stronger and lighter than steel on 17th March, France discovered the same trick on 25th March, Italy and Japan on 1st April, USA on 12th May, Russia on 24th November and finally Britain on 2nd December.

German scientists improved on their earlier work as on 7th July they created an advanced conventional composite armour, just as strong but even lighter than the normal composite armour. French scientists followed on 27th July, Italians and Japanese on 18th August, Americans on 24th November.

July saw the implementation of a new diplomatic effort, pioneered by the Swiss. Not having any ambitions regarding Minerva themselves, they proposed to host a permanent place of discussion at Geneva with the hope of preventing conflict or at least ensure conflicts would not erupt due to lack of communication. All of the powers eventually agreed to send ambassadors to Geneva. In other words, each power built a diplo-station but it doesn’t fit the lore to have them in space in this situation.

The year began with Russian scientists catching up by figuring out Conventional Advanced Composite Armour and their British counterparts solved it by 6th February as they lacked a DS specialist. Only Austria had not cracked this important tech yet.

The next major milestone happened on 21st November when Britain opened a naval shipyard, a first for humanity. British workmen continued to expand the yard despite it technically being capable of building something already - its sole slipway remained empty for now.

The opening of the British shipyard sharpened the race across the globe. All nations spent the year working feverishly on not only their infrastructure but also for designs for their first Aether vessels.

24th of January was a moment of celebration as the German shipyard opened. German scientists and engineers had worked around the clock to ensure that SMS Scharnhorst could be laid down immediately:

However, what they had not realized was that the shipyard was only capable of assembling a 1,000 ton aether vessels at first. While the workers continued to expand the yard, factories back in Germany were tasked to built as many components as possible to ensure that, once the shipyard was big enough, the survey corvette could be built in a rapid manner.

By mid-February, the British learned about the German plans and grew concerned enough to revisit their Sojourn class scout design. Hastily stripping it down to only one sensor and one engine, it would be just 2,200 tons. To ensure that the Union Jack would fly first on Odin, Admiralty ordered components to be built by industry.

On 27th February, American scientists alerted Washington to the fact that, it was highly likely that anything found on Odin would be useless unless there were men present with specialist knowledge, something they called Xenoarchaeology. Furthermore, these xenoarchaeologists would need special equipment to survive and work on hostile environments. Their case was heard and the US changed its research priorities. Europeans might get to Odin first but it was going to be the Americans who solved its mysteries.

On 18th September, Austria became the final power to discover Conventional Advanced Composite Armour. This delay was due to their lack of a proper DS scientist. They also continued with Xenoarchaeology research.

The year ended with construction starting on the Japanese shipyard, leaving Italy as the last power to have not even started constructing a shipyard yet.

Britain opened its first commercial shipyard on 20th February and yard immediately began work on the Andreas class aether vessel, classed as a colonist transport. Hidden from the public eye, a power struggle had erupted between the Admiralty, the War Office, the Foreign Office and the Colonial Office. All four administrations had at least some claim for managing future aether operations and none wanted to be eclipsed by some new bureaucratic organization. Furthermore, each had at least some expertise that could be transferred to outer space. For the moment, the Prime Minister kept things on an ad-hoc basis under his direct supervision. While scouting out the moon Odin was the highest priority, Britain wanted to establish colonies outside of Earth as well.

Russian military shipyard opened on 16th March but it needed to be expanded to 6,000 tons before it could start construction, so St.Petersburg ordered all components to be fabricated in preparation.

On the 17th April, the Russian scientists solved how to pack more essential supplies into smaller spaces, reducing the size of crew quarters needed by 10%, enabling the Vostok to carry more fuel instead. As the shipyard had not started constructing Vostok yet, the design was updated to have a range of 26.9 billion kilometres, though the maintenance life was reduced by 0.05 years.

USA opened their first shipyard on 1st May but it would need to be expanded to 4,500 tons before it could start building the Atlantis class aether vessels:

Exactly three months later, Germany opened their first commercial yard. It would take a little while before it could start building the Germanic version of a Colonist Transporter. By the end of September, Washington had assembled three Xenoarchaeology Groups:

Combined, USA had 12 teams capable of fieldwork on Odin.

The year was concluded by the opening of the French military shipyard.

19th February would forever be marked in history books as the date when the first human Aether Flyer was launched. RFA Douglas, an Andreas class colonist transport, with 158 crew and sub-lieutenant Harry Akhtar in command, was not supposed to be the first ship - that honour should have gone to the scout-explorer HSM Sojourn but it was not to be. Douglas ferried over a group of scientists and hardy pioneers to kickstart the British Lunar colony.

April saw the activation of the first Kaiserliche Xear Kompanie in Vienna as well as the launch of HMS Sojourn, the first human scouting vessel. It would take 259 days for the Aether Flyer to reach Odin, the suspected origin of the message but, unless something drastic happened, Great-Britain would reap the rewards of this race.

On 29th May, when Sojourn was between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus, Germany launched SMS Mittenwalde. Not only would she depart well behind the British ship, her slower speed meant that she would spend over a year in transit. German leadership were not impressed but it was too late to modify the ship - the Kluge Shipwrights naval shipyard had already retooled for the Altdorf class tankers that the General Staff logistics planners had requested to support operations around Minerva. Mittenwalde was unique and would forever remain so.

Meanwhile, British planners took advantage of the larger engines that Bevill and Vulcan were able to put out, creating a new freighter design called Crosby, that could haul twenty-five times as much cargo as the Andreas class, though it was slower and could not transport passengers. It was also gigantic, clocking in at whopping 40,000 tons! For comparison, Andreas class was only 9,000 tons. While Watts Services was expanded, the yard would continue to build Andreas class colonist transports. The second design was simply called Sojourn Mk.II and would replace the original Sojourn class once Morton Builders reached 4,200 tons of capability. The Mk.II carried four more geological survey sensors for a total of five and the larger Vulcan Con-Eng 40/40-100 gave it decent speed, though the increase in size did mean that it was somewhat slower at 476 km/sec compared to the originals’ 568 km/sec. The additional sensors also required significantly larger pool of crew, going from 45 to exactly 100 souls.

By 24th August, the second and last Russian Ksenoarkheologiya Otryad was commissioned. Now three powers had xenoarchaeology formations ready - the USA, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the Russian Empire. Two days later, the Germans finalized the design of their new survey corvette, one that was meant for more permanent work in the system and not just going to Minerva-Odin.

With doubled deployment time and larger engines, Hessen was quite a bit more capable. It also carried actual sensors ensuring that it could ‘see’ in Aether around itself. Then on 27th of August, the first human tanker, German Altdorf class aether flier SMS Passau was completed.

On 23rd December, RFA Ramsey, the second Andreas class Colonist Transport was ready and it immediately joined with Douglas to form the GB CLT Fleet.
