I put a 50% reduced size, Advanced Spinal Laser (38cm effective bore) on a FAC with max boosted (300% at my current tech level) engines and 4 layers of armor. The theory of operation is to dive at the enemy, fire at 50km where the lasers do full damage (37 points, which is enough to go through 10 layers of armor and then do internal damage), and then, if the enemy is still alive, retreat to allow the lasers to recharge. That takes just over an hour using the lowest capacitor tech available, which makes the weapon super cheap (15 BP). Could make it recharge faster, up to about 10 minute recharge, at increased weapon cost. Intent is for these ships to be moderately disposable.
First trial using own 30kton cruiser showed that 10 of these FACs could rush in to 50k km range with only losing one ship, fire, and get through shields and put a few big holes in armor, but it took a second round of fire to destroy the cruiser. 10 FACs is less than 50% the cost of the cruiser, so could attack with 20 (which would be cost parity, but only 2/3 the tonnage) and get a kill on the first attack run. That ignores cost of getting these to the fight, so need to either use as a local garrison or pay for a carrier. The FACs would also be more succeptible to missiles due to not carrying Missile Jammers, although they are pretty fast and have 4 layers of armor, so not a total soap bubble. Also, missile fire control (MFC) are super cost/size efficient as long as you’re shooting at close-in targets, so missile-ships can afford to be able to handle many, many targets at once by including a ton of cheap small MFC.
One thing I’ve taken away from this experiment is to put at least one or two more DFCs on my cruiser designs in the future. May also consider adding a few box launchers with anti-fighter missiles that can reattack until they hit, and a dedicated fighter/FAC active sensor.
