Ground combat outcome

So, I landed few units on an enemy planet, I wasn’t sure of my numerical superiority and indeed, in the first attacks I was loosing 2X or even 2.5X the amount of troops compared to the enemy, so because I am a noob of the ground combat I put everything on “rear echelon” whitout knowing what I was doing, in fear I could be destroyed.

With my surprise the ground combat stopped while I was still receiving info about the estimation of enemy forces.

After several days, while I was planning to bring reinforces, I started to receive info that my troops were again taking casualties, very little, at the same time it seems I wasn’t replying to the enemy fire, so I put everything on defence mode.

Now, very strange, I am hitting the enemy with more force despite having the same number of troops and the number of casualties of the enemy is 2X compared to mines, I also had few breakthrough.

How can I explain this sudden change of outcome? It seems when I landed that I was going to lose my troops, now it seems I can take the planet.

What’s rear echelon in a nutshell?

Can this be explained with the fact that I am now entrenched while the enemy is attacking me?

Entrenchment is a massive part of ground combat, you gave time for your forces to entrench, this massively reduced enemy hit modifier. when you initially landed they had fortification you had none and so killed significantly more of you then of them.

Rear echelon is a position which makes it so you cannot attack any enemy formation in frontline defense or attack, but you are significantly less likely to be targetted and enemy formations cannot reach you unless they are on frontline attack.

when an enemy is on frontline attack or you yourself are, they lose all fortification and thus becom easier to hit, frontline attack gives you bonuses to breakthrough and lets you hit into formations behind the frontline.

Yes indeed, after a long battle where I inflicted a lot of casualties, they seem have retread and we are now in a stalemate.
