My wife and I, plus our children of 14 and 16 at the time (so 20 years ago), had a couple of weeks in Las Vegas. We decided to leave most of things in the hotel, packed an overnight bag and set off for Yosemite.
It’s a while ago, but I remember going through a place called Pahrump and then into Death Valley. We planned to go over the high passes, but it was October and they were snowed in. So we went through Kings Canyon national park and stayed a night in Visalia at a motel. Next day, we got up to Yosemite in the snow, including me losing the car in a slide that fortunately went away from the cliff edge , and stayed in a cabin in the woods outside a hotel called the Ahwahnee. Yosemite is a must see for anyone who hasn’t been!
Next morning we drove all the way back to Vegas, down through California and then across the Mojave. About 500 miles I think. Can’t remember the exact route but I do remember what looked like a mini-Vegas as soon as we crossed the state line into Nevada.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Vegas. Usually 2-4 weeks each year between about 2004 and 2014, Including one year where I went for two weeks with my wife, came home for two weeks, then went back for another two weeks with a group of male (poker-playing) friends. They were quite different experiences .
This is now the travel recommendation thread! With your campervan, you could do an amazing road trip - winter would be a bit of an challenge but summer is easy peasy. Drive north from Oslo across all the bridges and tunnels, enjoy the fjords and so on. Once you reach Kirkenes, dip your toes in the Arctic Ocean, then turn south and you can drive across Finland north to south - the tundra & taiga of Lapland, then the forests and lakes. Grab the ferry from Turku to Stockholm and you can continue through South of Sweden and Skåne, cross the longest bridge-tunnel combination to get into Denmark and you’ve completed the grand Nordic circle! July-August is the best holiday season to do it, January-February is the most hardcore to experience winter at its best (or worst).
I hear Delta Pavonis is nice this time of year as long as you avoid the Precursor fleet in orbit of the third planet! Bit pricey as far as fuel goes though.
I’ve already looked at the Nordkapp trip, all the way from the Isle of Man via the UK, Netherlands and Denmark, while visiting the Lofoten islands en route. I think about 6 weeks would be required. Hadn’t considered going back via Sweden though.
We once did a day trip (!) to northern Finland, above the arctic circle, on December 21st to see Santa. Probably 1996. It was dark all day and -20C. A LOT of snow. Reindeer sleighs, skidoos through the forest, husky dog sleds, ice fishing on a frozen river. It was a very full day
I had my Erasmus studies in Finland during winter time, from January to June in 2011-2012, I was based on a town in the central of the country and visited the artic and this small island in the middle of the baltic. The sun at midnight and over.
If I close my eyes I can still see meters and meters of snow, the best experience of my life.
Then our paths almost certainly crossed. My wife and I used to come down from Cleveland each year. I spent almost all of my time at War College seminars. Listening to Col David Glantz speak is one of my fondest memories of that time.
Getting up early, hitting the snack shop for coffee and croissants, hurrying over to the lecture room… Sometimes Glantz was already there, waiting. I’d buy a couple of his self-published books, and he’d grin at me and look around at the half-empty room and say, “Looks like we’re suffering from a little attrition today!”
I attended a few different seminars during the year I attended. I remember one on offensive doctrines for different nations; American, German, Russia, British, etc.. Another was a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, and this would be late-90s probably so very different than today. Another including military risk management, with the low risk, high impact scenario being a UK nuclear attack on the US
First of all, I would like to thank Steve for this wonderful game. I have played VB6 and now the last 2.71 version.
I would like to make a request: would it be possible to implement an option to modify the dark background of the windows?
I’m not sure if it’s just me—perhaps I have some undiagnosed form of epilepsy or color blindness, or maybe my brain just doesn’t function quite right—but the black background makes me feel dizzy if I spend too much time playing.
Attending the Origins convention used to be something my wife and I eagerly looked forward to each summer. She would go shopping while I spent the entire day in seminars. Aside from Col Glantz, I loved listening to Col Les Grau. He lectured on Kashmir, and on Afghanistan looong before that country appeared on nightly news programs. Charles Sharp and Jack Radey were also great lecturers.
One night in the hotel bar I noticed Glantz, Radey and Sharp sitting together nearby, excitedly discussing some never-before-seen Red Army assault gun Sharp had identified in an old wartime photo.
Good times!
We stopped going to Origins because the tone of War College changed. I’m interested in military history, not “America triumphant” ideology.
