Creating Waypoints Linked to System Bodies

I googled. I used AI. I searched these forums. But I’m stuck and don’t want to progress in game until I figure out how to do this -

How do I create a Waypoint, preferably a Temp. Waypoint, that is linked to and moves with a body? I want to drop a sensor probe 4 mill off a body to see if its inhabited, but every time the Waypoint ends up being fixed where created while the body continues to move away. Google searches/AI suggests there is a “Link to SB” or “Add to SB” button in the Waypoint menu/bar (from main, tactical view of system) but I’m not seeing anything like that.

Help? TIA!!

I don’t think it’s possible to have a missile or buoy follow a planet at an exact distance. A waypoint only goes with the planet if it’s directly on it. A ship can be ordered to follow a planet at a minimum distance, but a missile/buoy/probe can’t.

If the body happens to have a moon at the right distance, you could drop your probe there, that’s the closest to what you want that I can think of.

This is no way to create a waypoint that follows a planet. Putting one on a moon if available is the best option.

BTW, AI is a very bad source of information for Aurora. It is wrong more often than right.

But the moon is also moving, creating the same issue? Unless there is some way to put a waypoint on a body that I’m missing?

Just click directly on the moon when you create a Waypoint.

I’ll try it!

I’ve found that doesn’t work reliably with very small bodies such as comets.

… maybe I’m not zoomed in close enough before clicking.

But for planetary or moon-sized bodies it works quite well.

Am I missing something?
I create waypoints on planets all the time. They move with the planet.

EDIT: I always use Named Waypoint when I do this. Maybe that’s the difference?

The OP wanted to create a waypoint 4m km from a planet that would follow the planet.

Yes, a waypoint placed so strategically that it found an orbital slot 4M km from the orbited body. To support a dwarf moon. A size 15 dwarf moon.

You have to be zoomed in and pretty precise to get the waypoint on the body. If you’ve done it right, then the body name will be next to the waypoint in the waypoint list.
