I’m tagging every new officer I get with a 30 or better in what I consider a vital field as a Story character so the fool won’t retire before I can use him, or get run over by a bus, or fall in love and move to Tahiti to become a beachcomber… anyway, taking the long view, will a Story character ever die of old age, or still be commanding a Survey ship at 120?

Still be commanding to the heat death of the universe unless the go boom boom. Story character basically stops their health from dropping from poor to dead, but they can still be killed.
And if they do go boom boom, they’re stored at the very bottom under dead/retired and you can revive them until you close the game. After the program closes it clears those data entries.
