Problem with Naval Ranks

I have a problem assigning a L.C. to a Military Vessel.

I have a Fleet Admiral at the top , Admirals for the Subordinate General Commands, then Commodores for specific Commands under the General Command type and finally I require the L.C’s to be allocated to the Ships (Military and Civilian).

I have the heirachy done for the Commands and am designing a Survey ship.

Now everything is Ok before adding Geological Survey Sensors. On the Class Design page the commander is shown as Lieutenant Commander , Control Rating 1 BRG. However when I add Geological Survey Sensors the Command rank then changes to Commodore , Control rating 1 BRG.

If I build a vessel showing Commodore as the rank then this in turn screws up the Naval Heirachy with all Commands wanting to move up a grade ( I have streamlined the ranks and have only 4 naval ranks). This in turn means that I end up with some commands each wanting the highest rank officer available ( the Fleet Admiral )

What can I do to ensure that the command on the Ship Design page stays at Lieutenant Commander when I add the Sensors? - do I have to start again and keep the full Naval Rank structure ?

There are some things like being a military vessel and having a jump drive that bump the rank required up by one. If the ship is small enough (1000 tons or less) then it will only require the lowest rank. As far as I know the only way to have a ship with military components (like survey sensors) be commanded by the minimum rank is for it to be FAC or fighter sized.

You could also add or rename ranks so that the second lowest is Lt. Commander. Otherwise you either have to change your admin commands or make the ship smaller. There is no “Junior CO” checkbox, only “Senior CO”.

You really need more than four naval ranks. There are three different ranks for ship commanders, depending on the size and components of the ship design. That increases to four if you use the senior CO option for any of the ship classes.

There can up to three different ranks for officers on the same ship, depending on components.

If you want admin commands above the ship level, that is a 5th rank. Superior admin commands to those is a 6th rank, etc.

Six ranks is probably the minimum you need.

Steve ,

Thank you. I will have to bite the bullet and reload the save game that I placed into a folder at the beginning. This had all ranks as I had not modified anything.

You don’t have to do that, you can add ranks to the existing and then “reorder” them and the game will do most the heavy work for you.

There is no need to reload. You can add ranks on the Commanders window and promote manually if needed.
