I assigned a naval Captain to run my Academy for awhile, and now I cannot assign any scientist to take over the position, which insists it requires a naval Captain to fill. There doesn’t appear to be any way to change this.

It is hard to help troubleshoot when I don’t understand what this means.

How does the academy insist this?

Have you tried unassigning the current guy before trying to swap commander type?

When I try to assign a leader to the academy now, it says “Capt” right next to the assignment and will not allow me to assign any leader who is not a naval Captain or better to it, just as a ship will have a minimum rank for its CO or what have you.

Yeah, no joy. I ended up going back to an earlier save before I appointed the Captain, because there really seemed to be no way to fix it. Appointing the Captain appears to have told the game to set a minimum rank for the Academy.

Assuming you are on 2.7.1 that might be a bug report in the waiting. I’m pretty sure you should be able to assign different types of commanders to academies

No, because I abandoned that save. A screenie wouldn’t tell much: when attempting to assign anything less than a naval Captain to the office, it offered no options, unlike before that appointment, when “Earth 1” or some such would appear in the pull-down.

As population grows, the required level increases. That sounds like the issue.

To assign a commander as academy commandant, they must be sufficiently senior to handle the number of academies at that population. For naval commanders, that is one rank per academy.

Okay, but the issue here is that after I assigned the Captain to the academy and then decided to replace her with a scientist, the game would not allow me to assign a scientist to the academy at all. The option simply did not appear.

The scientist has to have a sufficient admin rating to manage the academy. 5 admin per academy, or 1 per academy if using limited research admin.
