Promotions after Editing Ranks

When I want to change the ranks around or create my own custom line, I noticed I have to manually promote a lot of officers to fulfill the required ranks I’ve set for armies/navies. Is there any to automate this or at the very least promote a few officers and they auto-promote?

Auto-promotions require a clear line of succession from the bottom ranks up to the rank you’re trying to fill. Any gaps in the chain will delay or halt the auto assignment.

For example, if you need an admiral but you dont have any captains, the auto-assignment will not promote a commander to a captain to an admiral, it will just fail to assign the admiral spot.

When you have a large, diversified navy with a lot admin commands, this issue usually sorts itself out. In early game, or if your navy is mostly commercial, its easy to create a role with a rank too high to fill with your available officer pool, requiring manual promotions.

Commercial vessels have far fewer options for raising the vessel’s required rank unless you go out of your way to force them to require higher ranks via secondary control modules like the auxiliary control or combat information center, and using the senior CO option.

As long as you have ships and admin commands requiring each of the ranks from the bottom all the way into the lower flag ranks, auto-promote should work without your intervention, as long as your keep the command structure loosely pryamid-shaped.

I had a game where I solved this quickly by making 3 fighter classes: Rank +1 with Aux control, Rank +2 with Aux control and Combat Information Center, and Rank +3 with Aux, CINC, and Senior CO checked. I labeled them orbital officer training centers and built eight rank+1, four rank+2, and two rank+3. This was enough of a ladder to let auto-promote handle the entirety of the campaign without further input. That’s usually not required, but I was doing something very unorthodox with that game and knew the normal upgrade path would be a problem.
