Automatic promotion parameters

As an obsessive role player and stats freak I like to promote my officers based on promotion points 400-700 is commander, 700-1000 is captain, 1000-1200 is commodore and on and on same with the army equivalents

What this means is every January I have to go thru the junior ranks sorting out all the promotions all the way up to the top

Is there a way to say if promotion points = 400 then make commander etc or am I doomed to scrolling every calendar year and doing it all manually

This happens automatically to a point. Your “breakpoints” might be off a little, but overall, if there is a spot open, and they have the points, they will auto-promote. If there is not a spot open, they won’t promote and after a year or two will retire if no spot becomes open.

Medals with “promotion points” attached are a way to “insure” folks you want to get promoted will get promoted “naturally” and not have to worry about time in grade or, if selected, political influences.

I hoped this might be the case - but after 2 years I had 178 majors and no senior ranks at all

Auto assignment will only promote one rank at a time, and only if the commander has been in their current rank for at least a year, and only to fill vacant positions. It won’t promote just to promote.

Best way I’ve found to make sure you have different ranks filled is to overdo the naval admin structure. Can make it as deep as you’d like.

My ships, for example, use the ranks Lieutenant Commander, Commander, Captain, and Rear Admiral - with the rear only being on flagship capitals with dedicated modules.

Those are then in admin flotillas commanded by Vice Admirals, which are then in admin fleets commanded by Admirals, which are then in battlegroup/sector admins commanded by Fleet Admirals, which are under the naval war department admin commanded by a Star Marshal, which is then under the general top admin commanded by the Secretary of the Navy.

Similar structure for ground units

Edit:

So my current campaign looks like this:

GEN Department of the Navy - SEC

  • NAV Naval War Department - SM
    • NAV 1st Expeditionary Fleet - FADM
      • NAV 1st Battlegroup - ADM
        • NAV 1st Flotilla - VADM
        • NAV 2nd Flotilla - VADM
      • NAV 2nd Battlegroup - ADM
        • NAV 1st Flotilla - VADM
        • NAV 2nd Flotilla - VADM
    • NAV Home Fleet - FADM
      • NAV 1st Battlegroup - ADM
        • NAV 1st Flotilla - VADM
      • NAV 2nd Battlegroup - ADM
        • NAV 1st Flotilla - VADM

Each Flotilla has the ships broken into capitals, screens, scouts except the Home Fleet doesn’t have scouts. Each capital has a flagship(s) with a RADM on it.

“Civilian” admins exist too for logistics, mining, and survey with a similar structure.

Thank you for this

I allways use a deep Naval Organization and I cannot get automated promotions:

You don’t have any RADM positions so nobody can get promoted to that rank or any ranks above it.

What a dummy! Thank you for saving me alot of work!

I am away currently and will share without screens. I like to use admin commands with automated assignments and priorities setup from 1 to 6 depending on ranks. My structure would generally be as follow. For RP purpose these may be renamed as ministries, government departments, agencies, and so on by following the same structure. Here is a logistic example:

Navy core at the top with highest rank Sky Marshall all skill priorities are set as Political

O Logistic Navy Command ADM Logistic Political Political priority 2

OO Logisitc Operations HQ RADM Logistic Logistic Political priority 3

OOO Logistic Operations Department RADL Logistic x3 priority 4

OOOO Logistic Operations Office COMM Logistic x3 priority 5

OOOOO Logistic Captain 1st CPT Logistic x3 priority 6

OOOOO Logistic Captain 2nd CPT Logistic x3 priority 6

OOOOO Logistic Captain 3rd CPT Logistic x3 priority 6

The nesting ends at Department as you will have different departments which will start the branching depending on the function, either is cargo, settlers, mineral transport, tugs, and so on. The offices manage the split with captains that could be increased or decreased and usually manage systems. So all cargo ships in Sol have a different captain than the ones in Alpha Centauri. Offices and Departments also manage directly S.O. or fleets requiring higher ranking.

The idea is first they build skills and more they get close to the top and more the politics become important.

Sorry for restarting the conversation but for some reason I still can’t get auto-promotion to work.

I’ve created all the positions as a possible job:

I even tried to kick-start it by promoting 2 guys to RADM.

Can anyone point me to what I’m missing

After an officer is promoted, they have to wait a year before they can be (auto-)promoted again. IIRC this also applies at the start of the game as it takes a year before promotion vacancies are autofilled in my experience.

Yeah at game start it is best to do it all by hand - fill your admin positions, promote manually if needed, assign academy commandant, and so on. Then turn on auto-assign and it will take it from there once your game is well underway.

Auto assign or is there an auto promotion button I’ve missed?

Thanks, that was a typo, meant auto-assign, fixed it now.

Is there a reason the game overrides my minimum rank choice - I’m following the structure from a post above with a top rank descending through hq, office and department to spread the ranks out but for all senior ranks the game insists on having a fleet admiral despite me marking ranks as admiral and vice admiral and so on

The fleets/ships under the admin have rank requirements that conflict with what you’re trying to assign. The lowest level admin has to be one rank higher than the highest rank possible in any ship/fleet under the admin. If you have a ship with all command modules plus senior rank box ticked, it can reach admiral level.

Hmmmmm just freighters and survey so far - the direct commander is just a commodore but it’s FADMS all the way up the ladder from there - I’ll have another look

If you following my structure, it is important to adjust it when using flag bridges and SO ranks. Also, do you have 7 or 8 ranks atm? Because my structure works mostly without issues with 8, and a 9th required only way later in the campaign. If you use 7 you will always fall short.

Eventually, you can use it as it is for all survey/logistic/patrol and probably stationary defense forces.

However, strike groups, and more military active fleet would have to be nested in properly following the ranks rules highlighted in the previous post already and would be probably better off managed via dedicated branches.
