Updates to the Commanders window, for speed and opimization

The Commanders window is well known for being incredibly frustrating to use, I was speaking to Steve about and even he agrees that it is “clunky”. So I’m starting this thread in the hope that we can get some improvements done. If you have a suggestion for an improvement or feature, here is the place to put it.

Complete the multi select in the search frame. Being able to select several commanders, using the standard Shift and Ctrl features, at a time and act on them as a group significantly speeds up the process. You can currently use Ctrl/Shift features but the promote, demote, retire buttons only act on one of the selection.

Being able to act on, promote, demote, a selection of commanders by more than one rank at a time. Possibly with a pop up on Ctrl clicking promote, demote buttons.

Some error checking to make sure only one kind of commander is selected, don’t have an admin and a naval selected at the same time. Possibly avoidable if you only allow multi select from the bottom right search frame.

Anything that can be done to reduce the number of commanders that the search display frame shows will speed up the refresh. So giving us more parameters will allow us to refine it. Like only show commanders with greater/less than a percentage. We could get another row of drop downs below the current ones, which have some useful cut-offs, like >20% <20% as their selections.

It would be nice, and seems like it’d fit, to get a fifth searchable/sort parameter.

Smart detect updates to the search results, rather than a full resort every refresh. So if I promote a selection of commanders outside the range of the search/sort, just remove that from the array, don’t completely redo the search, which will speed up the refresh when it happens.

Separate the naval ground, science, admin and retired trees into their own frames, or use a drop-down to select only one kind at a time, only update the kind that is effected by the action, promotion, demotion, assign, retire, etc. Cut’s the refresh time by potentially 3/4.

Possibly don’t update the tree until a delay has passed, so multiple changes can happen between refreshes.

There is a bug in the colouring of the Sectors list, in the central frame, where even if you have a current Sector Commander it remains green, so you don’t know you do.

When selecting an assignment in the central window, Earths Academy Commander for example, it should show the commander that is assigned to that assignment in the above frames, and select it in the tree so you can act directly on that commander and know what/who it is.

We have a Reassign Naval button, but we don’t have a Reassign Ground button.

I added the below post to the quick suggestions, but it drives me crazy every time I interact with a large list of same rank commanders. Nuclearslurpee was kind to correct me to say that commanders listed on the left side “main list” are sorted by most recent promotion date(?) which may be as unhelpful as any sort I can imagine.

I’d really love some options to sort/filter the left side list of commanders to find someone I know I’m looking for without knowing the date a captain was promoted.

They are listed in order of seniority. In the real world if there are two officers of equal rank, the one with seniority is the one with the earlier promotion date.

Could some auto-retain options be added for dead and retired officers? Maybe it could be done through medals, with a checkbox on the medal design to auto-retain an officer who recieves it.

I like to retain the officers that die in combat or get captured as kind of a way to roleplay puting them on a mémorial but it’s kind of a pain searching for the right guys after longer play sessions and you have several hundred retired officers clogging up the list.

Absolutely concur. I even have an MIA/POW ribbon that I grant these people posthumously. It’d be great if the game would auto-retain them.

As an additional pass, and to simply and standardise the systems, would it be a good idea to make the assignment of other roles, like Sectors and Academies , have a system like the Governors, where you pick the top bonus’s you want, give it a priority, maybe a tick box for a +20% bonus and automated replacements and then it’s selected from the remaining pool after the other assignments are done?
